A very accessible beer, as a real thirst quencher or as an aperitif. Blonde beer has only recently become really popular among the general public. However, this beer style, named after its beautiful color, is not a species in itself. We have listed everything to inform you about this delicious beer and the different variations.
Blonde beer is a fresh type of beer, with less hops added than, for example, pilsener. This makes the taste of this type of beer less bitter. And that makes beer accessible to many people. The alcohol percentage is usually between 4% and 5%, but blond beer also sometimes occurs with an alcohol percentage of 8%! The beer style is further characterized by its light color and therefore fits perfectly with spring and of course summer!
Blonde beer was first brewed in Belgium, as a variant of double beer. Dubbel was exported to France, but the French were not a fan of this dark beer. A smart marketer came up with the idea of brewing a double beer with a pale malt. A new beer style was born and turned out to be a huge success.
This beer style gets its name from the beautiful golden yellow (blonde) color. Unmistakable for the beers. Nowadays it is blond beer so well known that almost every brewer in the Netherlands and Belgium has included a beer in its range.
In the UK, blond top-fermented beers are often referred to as 'pale ale'. But in Germany, these beers are often bottom-fermented. The term 'blonde' therefore in most cases refers to blond top-fermented beers from our own soil, Belgium and sometimes France.
“Blonde beer, named after its beautiful color, is not a species in itself, but does have different styles.”
In principle, blond beer is top-fermented. Bottom-fermented blond beers are usually called lager. Blonde beers are often made with light malts, such as pilsner malt. Blonde beer differs from lager in 3 ways. First, it is top-fermented; lager is bottom fermented. Secondly, blonde beers taste sweeter and fruitier. The third difference is the use of hops. Blond beer contains less hops than lager, which means it also tastes less bitter. The alcohol percentage of blond beer is between 4% and 8%.
Blonde beers are generally very easy to drink with their sweet, fruity, smooth and subtle taste. You can't taste the light malt very strongly, but it does predominate in the taste. The Belgian variants are often very fruity due to the use of yeast. Blonde beer can also be combined well with food, for example:
